Part I
With
support from Mr. Irv Schankman, on September 11, 2003, 12 rolls of film selected at random
were digitized at Postworks in New York City.
Over 19,000 digital images resulted from one morning's scanning. This material has been subsequently analyzed
and utilized in a variety of creative and research projects by Chris Burnett,
Dave Mount, Rennie Pritikin, Jack Tillmany, Elisabeth Tonnard, and myself. Some rolls have yielded their riches more
easily than others. Some are just
frankly more interesting than others.
We seldom know much about the "who, what, when, where, why, how"
differences from one roll to another.
Does a roll that is mostly fuzzy, people out of synch and generally
muddy imply something about the skill of the photographer, the mental state of
the photographer, the prevailing mood owing to the weather, other factors, all
of the above? Discoveries continue to
emerge - often by surprise.

Part II
With
support from Mr. Phil Kates, beginning in March 2009 an even larger selection of rolls
have been digitized. In the
intervening six years, digital scanning technology has become more available such that we can now do the scanning right here in Rochester at the Eastman Kodak
Company. We benefit now from
better/faster/cheaper to the extent that the resources currently available may
well allow us to digitize about 20-25% of this enormous collection. Part I accomplished less than 1%.
